Is Your Pet Food Simply Good Enough, or Actually Good?

September 8, 2022

Nicole Cammack and Dr. Ryan Yamka

A version of this article originally authored by Dr. Ryan Yamka, PhD, MS, MBA, FACN, PAS, Dipl ACAS, and Nicci Cammack first appeared in the October 2020 Issue of Police K9 Magazine. You’ve likely been told to focus on the top 5 ingredients and the percentage of protein or fat when it comes to picking out food for your pet. While these may appear to be important, they aren’t the ideal way to pick out food. None of these factors consider what happens to ingredients when they are processed and enter a dog or cat’s body. Believe it or not,...

Is ‘holistic’ pet food safer?

December 17, 2020

Nicole R. Cammack

The word holistic started gaining traction in the late 1960’s and has been increasing in popularity ever since. The word has many different meanings to many different people. For most, the word brings about thoughts of wholesome, healthy, natural, fresh, etc. It’s evolved to invoke an emotional response to pet owners. As such, we’re conditioned to think holistic represents at least some level of quality, purity, or healthfulness of a pet food product bearing the term. It gives us a sense of confidence and trust in the product. Grain-Free Pet Food Diets | What to Know Before Switching

October 7, 2020

Nicole R. Cammack

The benefit and necessity of grain-free pet food have come under scrutiny in recent years due to an FDA investigation due to a potential association with a canine heart disease known as dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). For the most part, grain-free refers to kibble, although some have also categorized various canned, freeze-dried, and raw diets under the ‘grain-free’ umbrella. But are these...

What if I told you that it’s highly likely that the pet food you are feeding your cat or dog has never been tested to ensure it is nutritionally adequate? How to Safely Store Dry Food

July 14, 2020

Michelle Yaglowski

We’ve all heard it before—Keep your pet food in the original bag, do not dump the food into a plastic container. But why? Proper storage of pet food is essential in maintaining freshness and keeping your pet healthy. Pet food storage containers are typically not airtight. Therefore, these containers allow unwanted air and moisture to get into the food. Aside from the unwanted moisture, the oils and fats from the dry food can interact with the plastic of the container. All of this can cause mold to grow and make the food less palatable, and enjoyable for our furry friends....
